Chris Stephens ColumbiaBanjo, Music Theory, Improvisation, Sitar, Oud, Shamisen.
Chris Stephens is a multi-instrumentalist musician and educator based in Columbia, Missouri. Originally a jazz rock jam band guitarist, Chris first became interested in world music through a chance encounter with the sitar over 20 years ago.
Discovering connections between the sitar, the guitar, and other historic instruments from the Middle East and Asia, he became fascinated with the commonalities between the world’s musical sensibilities and how all musical instruments are related.
As he sees it, musical instruments represent evidence of peaceful collaborations among different cultures throughout human history, and they offer us a chance to see our inter-connectedness today.
From bluegrass banjo to Arabic oud, Persian tar, Indian sitar, Turkish saz, Chinese pipa, and Japanese shamisen, he truly embodies the philosophy that music is the global language. Show more of Chris Stephens's Bio
Over the years, he collected more instruments and learned their traditional styles of music from teachers, active listening, and online research.
